Practice home of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits
Pavilion Recreation Complex in Taylors, South Carolina, is the practice home of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, the region's professional hockey club. Its refrigeration system builds a smooth sheet despite the warm conditions of the Upstate, and the facility has recently been remodeled.
Hockey here runs from beginners to adults, with programs for players of all ages and skill levels. Youth house and travel teams play through the Greater Greenville Hockey Association, the Greenville-based body that organizes youth ice hockey across the Upstate and western North Carolina. Junior Tigers Learn to Play Hockey, a USA Hockey-sanctioned program for intermediate players with previous skating experience, teaches skating, puck control, passing and shooting.
The rink doubles as a classroom. School field trips cover the dimensions of the skating surface, how rinks are constructed and how the ice is made and refrigerated in the Upstate's heat, and the Zamboni resurfacing the ice is a crowd favorite. The Pavilion Snow Carnival, a Morning Out program for children, adds sleigh rides, snowman building and ice skating.
