Home ice of the Helena Bighorns, with a lounge and balcony overlooking the rink
Steed Arena is the home rink of the Helena Bighorns, two-time Frontier Division winners. The building has game-ready locker rooms, a pro shop and a Bluetooth sound system. Jed Snyder, who played on the first Ice Pirates team in the mid-1990s and co-owns the Bighorns, bought the arena in 2023.
Renovations followed the sale. The first phase turned the upstairs into the Bighorns Lounge, a bar where fans can eat and play a round on a golf simulator during games, with private parties for up to 45 people. A second phase added windows and a balcony so lounge ticket holders can watch from inside the arena, and the drop ceilings were opened up.
Helena Area Youth Hockey teaches children to skate and play from age four and runs teams through age 18, and the Helena Figure Skating Club, the Last Chance Curling Club and adult hockey leagues share the ice. The arena presents the Montana Cup, the event that brought the University of Montana and Montana State hockey teams to Steed Arena for the first time.
