Hawaii's only ice rink, open since September 1982 and back since December 2022 after a pandemic closure.
Ice Palace Hawaii opened its doors on September 28, 1982, and it is still the only ice rink in Hawaii. Skaters from all over the world have come to skate here, Kristi Yamaguchi among them, and most visitors say they skated here as kids and now bring their own children.
The local hockey program is mainly a youth operation, with a contingent of adult players and a high school team as well. In the weeks after the 2022 reopening, a public session drew everyone from experts on their own skates to groups of high schoolers and adults learning to skate, with a roped-off beginner area giving first-timers space to learn. The building is cold, cold enough to make your nose run.
The rink shut down at the beginning of the pandemic and did not reopen until December 20, 2022, having used the closure for a long-awaited interior refresh: new bleachers, repainted walls and a new Zamboni. A USA Hockey visitor in December 2023 found a Sunday-afternoon public skate packed, and came away struck by how much passion the islands' players have for the game.
