The Humboldt Broncos' 1,800-seat home rink in the Uniplex, named for trainer Elgar Petersen in 2000
The Elgar Petersen Arena, known around town as the EPA, is the ice in the City of Humboldt's Uniplex, which also houses the Aquatic Centre, a curling rink, a fitness room and the Convention Centre. The Humboldt Broncos moved here from the Leo Parker Arena in 1980, and the rink holds 1,800.
The arena was named on September 15, 2000, for Elgar Petersen, who became the Broncos' trainer and equipment manager in 1970 when the team joined the SJHL; in 2015 he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in the same rink. Founded in 1970, the Broncos won the Royal Bank Cup as Canada's Junior A champions in 2003 and 2008.
The EPA is also home to the Humboldt Minor Hockey Association, the Humboldt Skating Club and men's and women's recreational teams, and it has hosted provincial and national competitions, trade shows, concerts and graduation. Ice usually runs from late August to the end of April. After the team's bus crash on April 6, 2018, more than 5,000 people came to a vigil here that was televised nationally.
