Built on the Clyde Iron Works site after the 2004 Peterson Arena fire

Essentia Duluth Heritage Center opened in May 2008 as the Duluth Heritage Sports Center, built after a Zamboni explosion and fire destroyed Peterson Arena on December 19, 2004 and left several youth and high school hockey teams without home ice. The ground has its own past: Clyde Iron set up shop at 29th Avenue West and Michigan Street in 1898, and the rink stands on that redeveloped industrial brownfield in Lincoln Park.

The complex was designed around an existing industrial building donated by the property owner, now the centerpiece called Heritage Hall. The Sill Arena opened first, with seating around the full perimeter of the ice, and the smaller Seitz Arena followed in 2009. The Duluth Amateur Hockey Association and Duluth Schools Hockey call the building home, and City of Duluth Parks and Recreation runs its ice programming here. In the first season, 2008-09, Duluth's three high school boys teams and one girls team played nearly all their varsity games under this roof.

Essentia Health took naming rights in June 2016, and the name was later shortened to the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center. On January 25, 2022 the Minnesota Wild took over Sill Arena for a Spotlight Game between the Duluth East Pee Wee B1s and North Shore.
