A domed 1935 memorial arena with the Iron Range's first artificial ice and a seven-sheet curling club
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
The Hibbing Memorial Building was first built in 1925 as a memorial to World War I veterans. After faulty wiring started a fire on December 28, 1933, it was rebuilt to a design by Hibbing architect E. R. Erickson and opened again on December 2, 1935, and during World War II the Army Air Corps used it for trainee barracks and classrooms.
Its 200-by-90-foot sheet under a domed roof was the first artificial ice on the Iron Range, and the arena seats 3,460. The Chicago Blackhawks held training camps here six times in the 1930s and 1940s, and Bob Dylan played the building's theater.
Today it is home ice for the Hibbing Bluejackets boys' and girls' teams, Hibbing Youth Hockey and the Hibbing Figure Skating Club, and the Hibbing Curling Club, founded in 1913, runs seven sheets inside the same building.
