Thistle Arena, with a new ice slab in 2025

The Moncrief Construction Sports Centre, known in Kenora as Thistle Arena, has been the place many residents laced up their skates for decades, a backdrop for winter memories, family traditions and community connection.

After more than half a century of service, the City of Kenora began a major renovation in May 2025 to replace the original concrete slab beneath the ice surface, first poured in 1968. Cracking and heaving had made ice maintenance increasingly difficult.

The new slab has heating pipes and insulation beneath the surface to help prevent freezing and heaving, which makes the ice smoother and safer and simplifies maintenance and removal of the ice in the spring. The work was funded by the Province of Ontario's Strategic Priorities Infrastructure Fund together with the City's Recreation Centre Reserves.
