Built after the old Wellesley arena's roof closed it; the ice opened in stages from November 2023
The Bill Gies Recreation Centre exists because the poor state of the roof at the old Wellesley arena closed that building. Ground was broken at the corner of Queens Bush and Hutchison Roads in March 2022.
The ice opened first: a phased opening in November 2023 allowed partial occupancy for up to 300 visitors, so skaters and hockey players could use the arena and change rooms while the rest was still under construction. The finished rink is NHL-sized, can also take curling, and has seating for over 500 spectators and eight dressing rooms.
The rink sits in a larger complex with a fitness centre, gymnasium, walking track and a community health centre that was completed in February 2024. The refrigeration plant has a heat-recapturing system. The builder marked the completion of the project in December 2025.
