Opened in 2008 to replace Mount Forest's old arena; home ice of the Patriots junior hockey club
The Mount Forest and District Sports Complex opened in 2008, after Wellington North council decided to replace the town's old arena. A building committee began looking into the replacement almost five years earlier and toured between 15 and 20 recreation facilities to decide what was needed locally.
Opening day, September 20, began with a parade of dozens of community groups and sports teams from the old arena to the new sportsplex, in what was described as the passing of the torch from one facility to the next.
The complex has an NHL-sized ice surface that doubles as an arena floor, an indoor walking track, a seniors room and dressing rooms, plus a large community hall used for wedding receptions, dinners, dances and trade shows. The Mount Forest Patriots, who joined the Ontario Hockey Association in 1987 and play in the Provincial Junior Hockey League, call it home. The future of the old arena was still undecided in the weeks before the new one opened.
