A community centre with ice rinks and a library, being upgraded
The Albert McCormick Community Centre is well known for its library, ice rinks and community rooms. In July 2021 the city opened the Albert McCormick Central Plaza at the front of the building, a project in the making since 2013 and now the newest addition to Waterloo's outdoor recreational space.
In May 2025 Waterloo council approved the next steps for two projects. An energy and accessibility retrofit will remove the central skylight assembly above the west ice rink, upgrade interior doors and windows to reduce condensation and fogging, add automatic sliding doors and create a fully accessible universal washroom with a ceiling lift, adult change table and shower.
A second project will expand the community centre and the McCormick Branch Library, with an updated exterior entrance and a fully accessible connection between the arena, the library and a new community room. The room will be a flexible, multi-purpose space with sports flooring and a basketball net, and the branch library will be renovated and expanded with a programming room, quiet study rooms and a makerspace.
