Main rink named for Elmira’s Dan Snyder

The Woolwich Memorial Centre is the Township of Woolwich’s recreation centre in Elmira, with two NHL-size ice surfaces, two pools, a fitness centre and a walking track, plus community, seniors and youth centres and offices for minor sports. The Concourse Cafe on the second floor sits off the track and looks down on the Jim McLeod arena through a glass wall.

The main rink, surrounded by stadium seating, is dedicated to Elmira native Dan Snyder, who played centre for the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers after starting with his hometown Elmira Sugar Kings in 1994. The Thrashers named an annual award for him, given to the player who best embodies perseverance and hard work without recognition, and the team held a practice and promotional session in the arena on October 18, 2009.
