Acadiana's ice rink since 2011
Planet Ice opened to the public in 2011 after nearly two and a half months of work converting the former Skatespot skate park into an ice rink. Owner Danny Smith said hockey needed to grow at the youth level, and that a rink in the center of town would expose more kids to hockey, figure skating and skating in general, including people with no experience at all.
From the start it was the home rink for the UL Ragin' Cajuns and LSU Tigers ice hockey teams, and both still practice and play their home games here, the Tigers in the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference. In its first weeks the rink hosted the Ragin' Cajuns against Tulane's club team. Since 2015 it has also been home to the Louisiana Drillers of the North American 3 Hockey League.
