Tekapo Springs' outdoor rink on Lake Tekapo, built on a rink tradition that dates to 1935

The ice rink at Tekapo Springs is an international-sized outdoor rink that its operator calls one of the most scenic in New Zealand, with views of Lake Tekapo and the mountains. Tekapo's extreme but beautiful winters made it an ideal place for winter sports, and New Zealand's first official ice rinks were created here in 1935.
In the mid-2000s Karl, the future developer and owner of Tekapo Springs, had the opportunity to purchase the original ice-skating rink and land. His dream was to revive winter sports in the Mackenzie, from pleasure skating to ice hockey to curling. The new rink officially opened in June 2007, with 12,000 visitors recorded in its first three months, and the hot pools followed in January 2008.
Rink-side there are wooden tables and an open fire where skaters can warm up. The family's ties to the area go back to 1973, when Karl Burtscher Snr and Audrey Burtscher bought Richmond Station on the eastern shores of Lake Tekapo.
