A former city arena on Forward Drive, run by a nonprofit since 2004 and a leader in adaptive hockey.
Madison Ice Arena, at 725 Forward Drive, was one of two indoor ice arenas the City of Madison owned and operated for years. In 2004 the city sold both to Madison Ice, Inc., a nonprofit formed for the purpose, which still owns and runs the arena.
It has two rinks for general skating and organized programs, plus a studio rink of 60 by 100 feet. A $1.2 million renovation in 2016 made the arena ADA-compliant, redoing the youth locker rooms, lobby and public bathrooms and adding more accessible spaces outside.
The arena first offered an adaptive learn-to-skate class in 2008 and now hosts three accessible hockey teams, including the Wisconsin Skeeters youth and Wisconsin Sting adult sled hockey teams, alongside youth hockey organizations, figure skating clubs, high school teams and adult leagues.
