Two sheets of ice under one roof in Marshall
Red Baron Arena & Expo runs two sheets of ice from the end of October through March. The main sheet, the Action Arena, seats 1,200 and carries a 14-by-25-foot video board, with the Ziegler Club Room looking down over the rink. The second sheet, the Lockwood Rink, is the practice surface, with bleachers for about 250 people and two curling lanes marked on the ice.
Youth hockey fills most of the calendar. The Marshall Amateur Hockey Association fields girls' 12U and 10U teams and boys from Mini-Mites through Bantam, and the association hosts tournaments through the season for all ages. Marshall High School runs a boys' and girls' JV and varsity tournament over Thanksgiving. The Marshall Curling Club plays out of the building, and the Southwest Minnesota Figure Skating Club stages its performance show here each March.
Junior hockey has passed through as well. During the 2020-21 NAHL season the Fairbanks Ice Dogs made Marshall their home ice because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, and their games drew fans from across the region. WCCO has named the arena the best hockey rink in Minnesota.
