Bloomington's city-owned three-rink arena, opened in 1970 and modernized in 2025.
Bloomington Ice Garden, known as BIG, opened in 1970 with one sheet of ice. A second rink was added in 1975 and a third in 1993, and over the years it has hosted Olympic and World Champion Dorothy Hamill, Wayne Gretzky, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and the 1980 Miracle on Ice U.S. Olympic men's hockey team.
In 2025 it went through a comprehensive modernization of all three rinks, adding new locker rooms, a new ice refrigeration system and completely new concessions, meant to serve the community for the next 50 years.
It is one of the busiest skating facilities in Minnesota, with more than 10,000 hours of ice time and 24 tournaments and events a year. It is home to Bloomington's boys and girls high school hockey teams, Bloomington Jefferson Youth Hockey Association and the Figure Skating Club of Bloomington, which stages an all-ages Ice Show every March. In the Bloomington Amateur Hockey Association's five annual tournaments, 89% of teams come from outside Bloomington.
