Hopkins' city-built arena in Central Park
The City of Hopkins built the Pavilion in 1990 with money from the 1989 park bond referendum, and it stands in Central Park between 11th and 17th Avenues. The mezzanine was remodeled in 2000 for the Hopkins Alternative Program, and a full renovation in 2018 replaced the boards, floor and ice plant and added locker rooms, shower rooms and a large warming house.
The 200-by-85-foot floor is ice from September to February, then turns to indoor turf in spring and bare dry floor in summer. In ice season it is home to the Hopkins High School boys' team and to the Hopkins Youth Hockey and Hopkins/Park Girls Hockey associations, and adult groups such as the Women's Hockey Association of Minnesota rent time here. The girls' high school program joins the boys every year for Hopkins Hockey Day.
The arena stays busy with practices and games for first-year skaters through adults. It also sells a bucket-list chance to learn to drive the ice resurfacer, with friends watching from the heated bleachers.
