The eight-sheet Super Rink in Blaine
The Super Rink opened in October 1998 as the Schwan Super Rink, the only ice facility in the U.S. with four Olympic-size sheets under one roof. Its original four rinks were funded by a cooperative of eleven local governments partnering with the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission, alongside youth hockey associations.
In 2006 four NHL-size sheets were added, with new funding partners including Blaine and Centennial youth hockey and Bethel University. Today the 300,000-square-foot complex has eight sheets, 32 oversized locker rooms, the 12,500-square-foot Herb Brooks Training Center for dryland work, and a heated upper concourse where the Hat Trick Café overlooks four of the rinks.
It is one of the largest ice arena complexes in the world and home to the U.S. Women's Olympic Hockey Team. The National Sports Center has long used it for tournaments, dating to the All-American Girls and Women's Hockey Tournament it created in 1994 and the USA International Hockey Cup in 1995, and its skating school stages the annual Frosty Blades figure skating competition, with the Northern Blades NSC Figure Skating Club based here.
