Richfield's 1971 arena and the Whitecaps

Richfield Ice Arena was built in 1971, designed by Wold Associates and built by Sheehy Construction, and has served the metro area and hosted top talent ever since. The original main rink seats about 1,300 to 1,400, with room for 500 more standing, on a sand base; Rink 2, added in 1999 as more of a practice sheet, seats 200 on a concrete base. Both are 200 by 85 feet.

In 2022 the Minnesota Whitecaps of the Premier Hockey Federation made it their home. Richfield City Council approved a lease running through April 2038, the team became the arena's main tenant, and the city planned a $2 million investment to add a Whitecaps locker room, expand the lobby and add classrooms and a training facility. The owners said they expected an exciting atmosphere for their games and saw the move as adding to Richfield's hockey history.

Today it is the home rink for Richfield High School and Holy Angels, with youth hockey coordinated by the Richfield Hockey Association and adults playing in the Adult Hockey Association, alongside open skating, skating lessons and ice rental.
