Two NHL-size sheets with seating for 900 and 335, replacing the community center's original rink
The City of Shakopee built its ice arena in 2016, acting on a facilities study completed in 2015, and placed it next door to the existing Shakopee Community Center. The arena has two NHL-size sheets, with bleacher seating for 900 at Rink 1 and 335 at Rink 2, plus team and coach rooms and dryland training space.
Construction was phased so the old arena could stay open, and the city partially recessed the new building into the site, giving it a smaller scale and natural light. The building is enclosed in large expanses of glass with stained-wood wall finishes, and one rink was designed with turf installation and air conditioning for the summer months. Once the new arena was completed, the community center's original ice arena was repurposed as an aquatic center with leisure and lap pools.
The city-operated arena is home to the Shakopee High School boys and girls hockey teams and the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association, and it runs 11 months of the year. Figure skater Anastasiia Smirnova trains here and previously coached Learn to Skate lessons in the building.
