A city rec center whose ice was dedicated at a hockey game on December 16, 1971
Before The Rec Center, the site was the Acme Field baseball diamond, sponsored by Acme Stone and Lumber. St. Louis Park voters approved construction in a referendum on June 3, 1969, the center opened for its first summer on July 14, 1971, and its ice rinks were dedicated at a hockey game on December 16, 1971. The original hockey arena seated 2,000.
A total overhaul in 1997-98 added a new ice arena, team rooms, a banquet room and a garage for the Zamboni. Today there are two indoor sheets, the larger west arena and a small east arena, with the skate shop between them.
Next door, the ROC is a covered outdoor rink used in winter for hockey, public skating and broomball, and it switches to turf or dry floor the rest of the year. St. Louis Park Skate School teaches the Ice Skating Institute's weSKATE program to skaters from age four.
