The Bracebridge rink that replaced a 1949 arena
Muskoka Lumber Community Centre replaced the 1949 Bracebridge Memorial Arena and the Carnegie Library built in 1906, and the old building was being demolished after 75 years of hockey. The client brief asked for a “Made-in Muskoka” look and feel, reflecting the nature of Bracebridge and its residents.
Muskoka Hockey Academy players were the first to christen the new rink, with scrimmages before the opening ceremonies, and a viewing venue on the second-floor community room looks out over the ice.
The Muskoka Lumber Arena shares the building with the Proline Rentals Fieldhouse, whose large indoor sports courts and fields are ringed by a running track, the Coulson Family Bracebridge Library, the Muskoka Leon's Auditorium and the Muskoka Rock Courtyard. The players' bench signage is made from left-over oak timber from the shiplap interiors.
