For the latest skating dates, check the rink’s official information.
Kingsmere Park has a double-sized hockey and skating rink in winter, made up of a hockey rink and a puddle rink. The City of Ottawa provides the boards, lights and other equipment on the condition that volunteers keep the fieldhouse open, and the ice is built and maintained entirely by volunteers, so the number of skating days in a season depends on how often they can flood and supervise.
Building base ice means compressing the snow and flooding it to saturation again and again; flooding both surfaces takes about three hours at that stage and 90 minutes on clear ice in good conditions. In the 2018–19 season volunteers started on December 26, 2018, opened the rink on January 6, 2019, and closed it after March 9, 2019. Four extra volunteers that year cut the two core volunteers' time from 80–100 hours a season to 50–60, and the hourly head counts the City requires logged 1,158 skaters over about 25 supervised hours a week, up from 694 the season before.
