A ship-shaped rink designed by Nicholas Grimshaw

Oxford Ice Rink on Oxpens Road is a 56 by 26 metre rink with room for 1,025 people. The Oxford Ice Skating Trust raised money in 1980 for a new rink, a project that Oxford City Council took over and still owns. Designed by Nicholas Grimshaw, the rink opened in 1984.

The building looks like a ship, thanks to two 30-metre masts at each end, and its fully glazed north end lets plenty of natural light into the rink. In November 2015 the Twentieth Century Society applied for it to be listed as a fantastic example of High-Tech industrial architecture, but the application was unsuccessful.

The rink is operated by Oxford City Council in partnership with Leisure Solutions Community Trust. It is home to the Oxford City Stars and runs public and disco skates, along with SEN sessions where the music is turned off and capacity is reduced.
