Home of Peterborough ice hockey since 1981

Planet Ice Peterborough, in Bretton, is where ice hockey in the city started: the rink was opened in 1981 as the first ice rink built in the UK since the 1960s. The Peterborough Pirates were formed in the summer of 1982, and reached the 1991 championship play-off final at Wembley, which appeared live on mainstream television.

The Pirates folded in April 2002 and the Peterborough Phantoms, founded that year, took over in the same arena. They secured a league and Cup championship in their first season, retained the Cup the next year, and won all three major honours in 2008-09. The Phantoms now play in the National Ice Hockey League.

A refrigeration installation is currently under way at the rink.
