A 48-year-old sportsplex, overhauled over three years

The Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex was 48 years old when it went through a three-year overhaul that renovated the lobby, common areas, washrooms, hallways and dressing rooms and brought safety code upgrades. The arena's refrigeration system was upgraded and a new pool filtration system installed. The facility stayed operational during construction because the many user groups worked around the work, and in 2018 the City of Lacombe received the William Metcalfe Award from the Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel for the project.

In 2016 the Lacombe Generals of the senior AAA Chinook Hockey League, formerly the Bentley Generals, made the move full-time to Lacombe. The team spent the first three months of the season on the road, played its first Lacombe home game on December 7 against the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs and won its second, on December 14, 4-3 over the Innisfail Eagles. The franchise had won the senior AAA national title three times since 2009, and the Advocate reported a buzz around the sportsplex as if the team had been there for decades.
