A 200-by-85-foot NHL-size sheet with seats for 350 inside the Penhold Regional Multiplex.
Heavy equipment from Pidherney's Construction was excavating for the Penhold Regional Multiplex in April 2009, on the town's northeast fringe. Its first phase was planned as a 65,000-square-foot building with a regulation-size ice rink, seating, dressing rooms, a walking track and a multi-function room, due in spring 2010. Plans called for the building to grow to include a fitness centre, meeting rooms, a library and a gymnasium, and that October federal funding was approved for the multiplex's final phase.
Today the multiplex serves all of central Alberta, housing the Penhold Fitness Centre, a gymnasium, the Town Administration Office and the Penhold & District Library around an NHL-size 200-by-85-foot sheet. The arena seats 350 spectators and has large dressing rooms, an indoor fitness track overlooks the ice, and the Town credits its reverse-osmosis water system for the quality of the ice.
The Town runs Learn 2 Skate classes on the ice for children as young as three, with four spots per class. Out of season the floor is rented for lacrosse, roller derby, ball hockey and special events, and the rink streams as a LiveBarn venue.
