Staveley's community-owned outdoor rink in the foothills of the Southern Alps
Currently out of season Closed for the 2026 season: the rink's home page says "WE ARE NOW CLOSED FOR THE 2026 SEASON". Its FAQs give the season as 30 May to 31 August, weather dependent; the 2027 dates are not posted yet. Official schedule update
Staveley Ice & Curling Rink sits in the small rural township of Staveley, on the Canterbury Plains in the foothills of the Southern Alps, and its site dates the rink to 1951. It is community owned and run on a volunteer basis, and its proceeds go back into the Staveley community.
The original rink was built on a stone and soil base and needed about four inches of ice before it could safely open, which warmer winters made harder to reach. Planning and construction of a refrigerated concrete rink took place across 2022, 2023 and 2024, and the Staveley Community Society opened it on 1 July 2023. A refrigerated pad needs only around two inches of ice, so the rink can guarantee a season of at least three months.
The ice is surrounded by native beech forest and the Southern Alps.
