The City of Stratford's energy-saving arena on Oak Street
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for Dufferin Arena…
Dufferin Arena began as an outdoor ice rink in Dufferin Park in 1967. The rink was enclosed in 1969, and further renovations followed over the years, the most recent a full renovation in 2010 that added a number of energy conservation systems.
The most notable is a refrigeration system that transfers heat from the ice to the dressing room floors, and waste heat is also captured to heat domestic water and to melt the snow scraped from the ice without opening an outside door. New lighting uses only 15 percent of the energy of the old system, and Solera glass panels along the front and back let daylight in.
A green roof insulates the dressing rooms and reduces the heat island effect. A new fire monitoring station and sprinkler system added life safety equipment where there had been none.
