Richmond Hill's Church Street arena, built in 1923 and given artificial ice by a 1950s residents' campaign.
Richmond Hill's arena at Church Street and Lorne Avenue, today the Elgin Barrow Arena, was built in 1923 with natural ice, and its unreliable surface left many would-be skaters disappointed. In 1954 residents formed the not-for-profit Richmond Hill Arena Association to raise money for artificial ice. Elgin Barrow was among the members who led that campaign, and in February 1955 he and Walter Smith signed a 15-year lease on the arena.
A record crowd of 1,500 paid to attend the official opening of the new ice surface on March 19, 1955, with solo figure skating by local skaters Mary MacKay and Louis Stong. From 1968 the arena hosted an annual midget hockey tournament organized by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 375, which brought many future NHL players onto its ice.
The Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame occupies the arena's second floor. The building also hosted the 2010 Clarkson Cup, where the Minnesota Whitecaps beat the Brampton Thunder 4–0 in the championship game on March 28, 2010.
