Newmarket’s two-pad complex from 1985, home of the OJHL Hurricanes and once of the AHL’s Newmarket Saints
The Ray Twinney Recreation Complex opened in 1985 in the southwest part of Newmarket and is named for former mayor Ray Twinney. The Town-run complex on Eagle Street West has two ice pads, a larger one and a smaller one, beside a large indoor pool with seating and snack bars. The pool is home to the Newmarket Stingrays competitive swim club.
The main arena seats 3,700 and is home to the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Newmarket Redbirds junior B lacrosse team. It was also home to the original Hurricanes of the Ontario Provincial Junior A league, the AHL’s Newmarket Saints and, briefly in the mid-1990s, the OHL’s Newmarket Royals. In 2019 the Toronto Marlies played a preseason game here against the Rochester Americans, and the arena has hosted many NHL charity games.
