Completed in 1987 after the Dough Boys hockey club raised funds; owned by an all-volunteer ice association
The Rhinelander Ice Arena was completed in 1987, built after the Dough Boys hockey club organized in the 1980s to raise funds for it. Before that, skaters and hockey players on the south side used two lots by the ball fields in Pioneer Park that were flooded to make rinks.
The Rhinelander Ice Association, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, owns and operates the building with the support of area businesses and individuals, and community support made the arena possible. It hosts youth hockey tournaments, adult hockey tournaments and figure skating competitions.
A motorized Hodag, spearheaded by Dr. Harry Skye and installed in the early 2000s, flashes its lights when Rhinelander High School's hockey teams score, and it comes out once per tournament for the youth players. The floor has also hosted a circus, concerts, a gun show and roller derby bouts.
