Mosinee's clear-span covered rink, which by 1975 replaced the Dessert Park outdoor ice
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for Mosinee Recreation Center…
Hockey in Mosinee goes back to the 1930s, when Harold Walters and Herb Kell started the town's first program. Kell built the first rink in Dessert Park, and his grocery store across the street served as the warming house. By 1975 that natural outdoor rink, which had served the community for almost 30 years, was replaced by a new rink at the new recreational park.
The new rink sits under a clear-span roof built through the federally funded LAWCON program. In winter the enclosed space holds hockey and free skating; in summer it becomes a park pavilion for church picnics and community gatherings. Volunteers shaped it early on: in the fall of 1981, four of the town's longtime players and hockey fathers were at the rink finishing the boards they had built. The Mosinee Hockey Association has adopted the park, and the Mosinee Hockey Club runs youth hockey here.
Mosinee's senior team, the Papermakers, won state championships in 1954 and 1957, helping the town rival Eagle River for the title of Wisconsin's hockey capital. They won again in 1976 and, after a long drought, took state senior titles in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2009, plus two national championships.
