Whitefish's volunteer-built rink, the only facility in Montana with ice 12 months of the year
Stumptown Ice Den is Whitefish's one and only ice rink, and volunteers built it. A brigade of them raised the money and put in the hours to build the rink more than a decade ago. The Whitefish Sports Facilities Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has since assumed management of the building.
For many years it ran as a seasonal operation. Demand for ice time eventually pushed it to stay open year round, and it is now the only facility in Montana with ice 12 months of the year. More than 1,000 youth and adult skaters take part in its hockey and figure skating programs.
Three organizations put most of them on the ice. Glacier Hockey runs competitive hockey for boys and girls aged 4 to 18. The Whitefish Adult Ice Hockey Association covers adult hockey from Lakeside to Whitefish. Glacier Skate trains figure skaters toward the competition season and the next show.
