Whitehorse's two-sheet arena, completed in 2005 as a venue for the 2007 Canada Winter Games
The Canada Games Centre was completed in 2005, built specifically as a venue for the 2007 Canada Winter Games, the first Canada Games held north of 60. It was added to an existing swimming pool, and the building's energy system harvests waste heat from the ice-making plant to heat the pool water.
The ice side has two sheets, one of them Olympic ice, and the building also holds indoor soccer, a running track, a full gym, meeting rooms and a pool with a lazy river.
The City of Whitehorse now owns and operates the centre. In 2015 the city's director of community and recreation services put use at close to 3,000 people on an average fall or winter day, and said Yukoners from rural communities and Alaskans from Skagway and Juneau use it regularly.
