Formerly the Wilmington Ice House
Polar Ice Wilmington is the rink formerly known as the Wilmington Ice House, a single-sheet facility of about 30,000 square feet. The operator changed when ASEC bought the rink, a December 16 purchase that folded the Wilmington sheet into the seven sheets ASEC already ran in the Raleigh market.
The one sheet carries public skating, figure skating, learn-to-play hockey, youth and adult leagues, college hockey and curling. The Wilmington Junior Seahawks, a Tier II program in the Carolinas Hockey League, skate out of the building, and the rink's own learn-to-play ladder starts with Kinder Hawks, for 4- to 6-year-olds coming out of the Snowplow Sam skating program. UNCW's Seahawks club team also calls it home ice in the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League.
In October 2025 the building had an air-quality problem: after UNCW beat Virginia Tech 5-3 on a Saturday night, multiple players were treated for breathing issues and chest pain. In response to the low humidity levels, the Ice House replaced the humidistat so the rink holds the correct level of moisture. Referee Eric Wright said that once you left the rink and got into fresh air, everything seemed to ease off.

Admission
Public skate: admission 5 & under $5 per skater (includes skate rental if needed); admission 6 & older $10 per skater; admission + skate rental 6 & older $15 per skater. Stick and Puck is $15 per skater. Freestyle sessions are $7 per half hour. Adult Pick Up Hockey (18 & older) is $15 per skater, goalies free.
Skate rental adds $5 to the $10 admission for skaters 6 and up (a $15 combined ticket) and is included in the $5 admission for skaters 5 and under. A kids' skating aid rents for $5, is meant only for children under 54 inches tall, and can only be reserved first-come at the rink, not booked online.
Public skate, stick and puck, freestyle, and adult pickup hockey are each booked through their own online calendar on the rink's website (powered by DaySmart).
Helmets are recommended but not required for public skate (the rink does not provide them), and carrying children on the ice is not allowed; everyone on the ice must wear skates. For stick and puck, skaters under 18 must wear full hockey gear with a full-face helmet, and adults 18+ must wear a helmet, gloves, shin guards, and elbow pads.
