Two year-round indoor rinks on Gateway Road, built up by volunteers since 1970
Gateway Recreation Centre grew out of a push by residents of the fast-developing north east side of Winnipeg in the late 1960s. The chosen site was Gateway and Bonner, and the first executive was elected on December 8, 1970. The centre now calls itself a family sportsplex that has served north east Winnipeg for 50 years and counting.
The arena was built in stages. In 1991 the centre put the shell of the building over two outdoor rinks so that wind chill and temperature no longer decided whether children could skate, and in 1995 an artificial ice plant made it a year-round ice facility. The ice plant was replaced in 2021.
Today the centre has two year-round indoor rinks, two outdoor hockey rinks and an indoor soccer pitch. It describes the $6 million facility as built largely on the back of the many volunteers of the area.
