Dakota Community Centre's two-rink sportsplex, named for Jonathan Toews, who started here as a Dakota Lazer
The Jonathan Toews Sportsplex is the arena side of Dakota Community Centre in south St. Vital, a community centre incorporated in 1987. Its two full-size ice surfaces are the South Rink and the North Rink. Toews first played organized hockey here as a young Dakota Lazer, and after he brought the Stanley Cup home to Winnipeg in 2010 the community centre was renamed in his honour; the sportsplex carries his name today.
The rinks host the Dakota Adult Hockey League, figure skating, camps and public programming. The MJHL's Winnipeg Freeze practised, trained and played all their home games here in the 2021–22 season, before moving to the Hockey for All Centre. On October 12, 2017 the centre opened the 60,000-square-foot Dakota Fieldhouse next door, joined to the sportsplex by a covered, heated connection.
"From my earliest days playing hockey, Dakota Community Centre has played a pivotal role in my upbringing and my career," Toews said by video at the Fieldhouse opening. He came back to the sportsplex to announce his retirement from professional hockey. A new arena is planned as part of a further expansion of the centre, with federal funding committed to its first phase.
