Dempsey Anderson Ice Arena on West Northern Lights Boulevard is named in memory of Dempsey Anderson, the principal founder of the Anchorage Hockey Association, who coached for the association for several years. AHA was formally incorporated on June 6, 1961.
It is one of two public arenas, with Ben Boeke, that have served Anchorage skaters for decades, and this West Anchorage mainstay hosts everything from learn-to-skate mornings to weekend games.
Both arenas are now managed by Anchorage Community Ice Management, a local nonprofit created by the Anchorage Hockey Association. It runs the rinks as community-owned assets with the aim of returning them to their original glory, and it measures success in ice hours, healthy programs and trust rather than profit.
