Eagle River's city-owned Olympic-size rink since 1984, renamed for Chugiak coach Harry McDonald.
The McDonald Center in Eagle River was built in 1984 as an ice venue. It is owned by the Municipality of Anchorage and has been managed since 1984 by Fire Lake Arena Management, Inc., a nonprofit founded in 1983 to run it. In 1994 the building was renamed to honor Harry McDonald, a Chugiak High School hockey coach who died in a plane crash.
It has an Olympic-size ice rink, two walking tracks and community rooms, and in 2014 it expanded with indoor turf so field sports could play year-round.
The center serves youth and adult sports across the area. The volunteer, nonprofit Mustang Hockey Association runs house and competitive hockey for children from 4 to 18, and the Alaska Salmon Sharks and the Eagle River Hockey League also play here. Challenge Alaska runs a Warrior Hockey program on its ice for veterans living with disabilities.
