A single NHL-size rink opened in December 2014, home ice for Atlanta's largest men's league six nights a week.
Center Ice Arena opened in Sandy Springs on December 20, 2014, with little fanfare. Business partners Mike Aldredge, Michelle McIntosh and Stephane Normandeau built it on vacant land owned by Squire Inn, most recently the site of a Days Inn hotel demolished in 2007.
The 36,000-square-foot building holds one 200-by-85-foot rink. Finding a general contractor who knew how to build an ice rink in the Southeast was difficult, so the owners brought in an expert from Alberta, Canada.
The Atlanta Capitals junior team began playing here in 2015, when its owner moved the team to metro Atlanta, and took its home games to the Atlanta IceForum in Duluth for the 2018-19 season. The Atlanta Curling Club, which the owners once counted among the rink's tenants, now makes the IceForum its home base too. The owners have said the rink gives the Atlanta Amateur Hockey League, one of the largest organized men's hockey leagues in the country, ice six nights a week, and its skating academy counted 1,100 members in the 2024-25 season. The owners describe a positive family atmosphere, and inside, the temperature never tops 65 degrees.
