Built by the Blong family and opened in May 1981; renovated in 2011; home of the West Auckland Admirals
Paradice Avondale opened in May 1981 on Lansford Crescent as New Zealand's first international-size indoor arena. Ross Blong, a former dairy farmer, and his wife Nell had bought their first rink, in Glen Innes, in 1974, and the family has run the Paradice rinks ever since.
It is the oldest and largest operational ice sports centre in Auckland. The West Auckland Admirals and Auckland Steel play their New Zealand league home games here, it is one of two home venues of the Auckland Mako, and the arena hosts national-level hockey during the NZIHL and NZWIHL seasons. Its clubs include the Auckland Ice Hockey Association, the Auckland Ice Figure Skating Club, the Allegro Ice Dance Club, the Hauraki Ice Racing Club, Ice Speed Skating New Zealand and the Auckland Curling Club, and the arena runs its own skating academy.
A major upgrade in 2011 gave the rink a new ice floor, dasher boards and refrigeration system.
