Paradice Botany, the Blong family's second rink, opened at Botany Downs in 1999
Paradice Botany was built in 1999 as an Olympic-sized indoor ice rink, the second for the Blong family's Paradice business and again a first for New Zealand. The family's rink business dates to the early 1970s, when farmer Ross Blong went looking for a people business and bought an ice skating rink in Glen Innes in 1974.
Their first international-size indoor arena opened in May 1981 at Avondale. By the late 1990s the second generation, heavily involved in ice sports at an international level, dreamed of a second rink, and Botany Downs was the result; the rink is described as still going strong today.
Paradice also ran Auckland's first temporary outdoor ice rink at Aotea Square in 2012, added New Zealand's first event ice slide in 2014, and has taken its temporary rinks to events across the country.
