An NHL-regulation rink with 29,000 square feet of ice, the only publicly accessible rink of its kind in Austin
Chaparral Ice at Northcross has been a fixture of the Austin community for more than 25 years. Its NHL-regulation rink, with 29,000 square feet of ice in total, is the only publicly accessible rink of its kind in the city, and it sits at the heart of Northcross Center.
The facility hosts more than 150,000 visitors a year through its programming. Today it is a gathering place for figure skaters, hockey fans, kids' camps and, in the operator's words, snow-shy Texans looking to escape the summer sun.
The Chaparral Ice name also went on the rink near Austin's northeast border with Pflugerville where the Austin Ice Bats played from February 15, 2006, after leaving the Travis County Exposition Center over scheduling conflicts. That building seated only 500, and in May 2008 the team announced it was leaving Austin, citing a lack of fan support at Chaparral Ice.
