Rebuilt around its old ice pad in the 1970s, with coins set in the concrete of the 2019 floor
The Southampton Coliseum was rebuilt in the 1970s. The ice pad and boards stayed in place for the 1976-77 season, and players skated outside on the original pad with no roof, in what the town's former recreation director, Ted Quennell, remembers as the snowiest winter ever.
The building is also home to the Southampton Curling Club. The Lakeshore Winterhawks senior hockey team played out of the Coliseum from 1989 until 1996, and when the ice had to come out of their usual rink, the Plex in Port Elgin, the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks were forced to play the 2009 championship series in Southampton. In January 2015 the Coliseum hosted a WOAA Senior Hockey League regular-season game for the first time in 19 years.
In 2019 the Coliseum's floor was replaced. When 30 trucks poured the concrete, two former employees who had each worked at the building for more than 30 years met at centre ice to place coins in it: one from Southampton's 125th anniversary and one from the Saugeen Shores Pumpkinfest of 2000.
