An arena inside Gurnee Mills that reopened in 2021 after Rink Side Sports closed
Top Shelf Ice Arena sits inside Gurnee Mills, where Rink Side Sports once added an NHL-size ice rink to the existing arcade and children's play area. Rink Side Sports and its Tilt Studio arcade closed in 2020, and Top Shelf, which opened in 2021, took over the rink.
When ownership changed in early 2021, Kurt Carlson and Tim Kinsman, both heavily involved in Vipers Hockey, a youth hockey organization based in Gurnee, co-owned the arena. Carlson wanted to make Gurnee Mills a "hockey destination" and was candid about the business: "If ice rinks were super profitable, you'd see one next to every Starbucks."
The building mixes ice and hospitality. Top Shelf Bar & Grill is located inside the arena, and Beyond the Edge hockey training is located inside as well. The owners opened with a six-weekend tournament of 16 teams, and the rink partners with the Chicago Blackhawks on a free Try Hockey event for kids ages 4 to 10.
