A 1991 leisure-centre rink with a junior hockey and figure skating base that survived a 2026 closure plan
The Time Capsule in Coatbridge opened in 1991, a leisure centre with a water park, gym and soft play as well as the ice rink. The rink is used by a number of skating groups and hockey teams, and its programmes include an early years introduction to ice skating, a figure skating junior academy and five junior ice hockey teams.
North Lanarkshire Figure Skating Club has at least 60 children skating there, and the Lanarkshire Lightning ice hockey team's coach counts about 150 children, 51 of them in the Scotland national programme. On Wednesday nights there is a drop-in hockey session for over-18s only.
In 2026 North Lanarkshire Council weighed closing the rink for an activity zone and padel courts. A petition against the move drew around 15,000 signatures, a council consultation found that 78% of respondents wanted the rink kept, and the council then said it would not go ahead with closing it.
