Saved by volunteers in 2000

Frontier Ice Arena dates to 2000, when the Kootenai Youth Recreation Organization (KYRO) was formed to keep the only ice arena in the Coeur d'Alene area from going out of business. The rink was an open-air structure at the time, and KYRO's volunteers set out to improve and enclose it. KYRO owns and operates the arena today.

The single NHL-size sheet is ringed by stadium seating, with more seats perched above the ice. The Coeur d'Alene Hockey Association (CDAHA) runs youth hockey here in partnership with the arena, and Lake City Figure Skating, the basic-skills program on this ice, is operated by the Spokane Figure Skating Club. A club of 139 skaters trains here, 92 of them competitive skaters who put in more than 800 hours on the ice each year, and its competitions bring nearly 200 visiting athletes to town annually.

With only one sheet, local teams and skaters have had to look outside the region for ice time and tournaments, so KYRO is raising money for a Second Sheet Project that would double ice availability at Frontier and make room for more practices, public skating, figure skating, hockey and curling.
