The city's covered real-ice rink in Derby Market Place, beside the old Guildhall
Currently out of season The covered Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink returns to Derby Market Place on 28 November 2026 and runs to 31 December. Official schedule update
The Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink is the city's covered real-ice rink, and its cover means the fun continues whatever the weather, with plenty of rink side space for anyone who would rather watch than skate. Last year over 22,000 visitors went to the Nordic Bar next door and 11,000 people took the ice.
The Market Place has a long civic history. A moot hall was first established in the area in 1204, and Habershon's guildhall was severely damaged by fire on 21 October 1841, leaving only the centre and outer walls standing. The guildhall ceased to be the seat of local government when the town council moved to the Council House in 1949. Many outdoor events in the Cathedral Quarter are still centred on the Market Place or Cathedral Green.
Special sessions for toddlers and their parents or carers run alongside the general skating, and afterwards skaters can warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine from the Nordic Bar.
