A 400 m track laid out in 1972, covered in 2000

De Meent is a half-covered 400 m track in Alkmaar, laid out in 1972; the roof dates from 2000. A 30 by 60 metre ice hall was added to the complex in 1997, and the municipality of Alkmaar owns both track and hall. Before it was covered the track hosted the world sprint championships in 1977 and 1982.

The Dutch allround championships came to De Meent in 2002 and the national marathon championship on artificial ice in 2005. The track is known for its wind, which at some wind directions is caught as in a funnel, so skaters have it behind or against them all the way round.

On Sunday afternoons the 400 m track becomes the Alkmaars IJsplein for families, and one-hour Buffelavonden suit skaters who want to keep going round. In the ice hall adults share the ice, from long-track skaters to ice dancers. Children skate with clubs on Saturday mornings, Schaatsschool In Balans teaches here, and Shorttrack Alkmaar has held a competition for its 25th anniversary.
